It is time to seize the cow

Why? Why are we seizing cows?

Aliens are a boogeyman.

In pop culture, we are told that aliens will kidnap us from our beds and do lots of weird medical experiments on us, including, though not limited to, an anal probe.

I don't say this to disparage or ridicule anyone who believes they have been abducted. I'm talking only about cows.

Because for some reason, pop culture believes that aliens are experimenting on, killing, and abducting cows.

These are myths. They're stories.

In this Alien/cow dynamic, the alien is the monster and the cow is the victim. It parallels the alien/human dynamic.

But we don't have to be the human in this scenario. We can be the alien.

If we are writers, we ARE the alien. We have the power to take what we want and make it real.

This alien/cow story needn't be a dark one: we make it what we want it to be.

Maybe we really like cows. Maybe we're rescuing cows from humans. (We eat enough cows to warrant outside "humanitarian" intervention.)

The point is, in the alien mythos, aliens are the agents of action with an unknown goal. That's why the story lends itself to horror. Not knowing scares us.

We don't have to be the cow. We don't have to wait until we're abducted or discovered or someone decides that we're good enough to publish or produce.

That's not the world anymore. We've never had a bigger access to an audience than we have now.

Be the alien.

Exercise your powers.

Write.

Make up crazy crap.

Put it out there.

Be vulnerable and take a chance.

Seize the cow.
